Improving Patient Compliance
Treatment Goals and Outcomes
It’s crucial to outline the goals and desired outcomes of treatment to patients:
1.The patient needs to breathe through their nose - success of treatment is dependent on this.
2.Lips must be together at rest, and the tongue must be in the correct position.
3.No visible lip activity when swallowing - this takes some practice.
4.Improved facial development - by allowing the patient to reach their full genetic potential.
5.Class I occlusion with a correct bite.
To achieve the treatment goals and outcomes a number of actions need to be taken:
1.The patient must wear the appliance for one to two hours each day and overnight while sleeping.
2.Regular, everyday use is essential. If it isn’t worn every day, it’s not going to work.
3.The appliances must stay in at night.
4.At least one myofunctional exercise (from theMyobrace Activities™ or myofunctional exercises) must be completed every day.
5.The patient must learn how to swallow correctly and position the tongue in the correct place in the mouth. Just wearing an appliance without having improved poor muscle function and myofunctional habits is not enough.
6.Patients must keep their mouth closed when not speaking or eating.
